A Perceptual Approach to Music Theory

Dr. Alexander Rozin and Dr. Mark Rimple

We are currently writing and testing a new textbook for undergraduate music theory that upends the traditional approach to the discipline in favor of a diverse and perceptual approach.  Our text:

    • is not stylistically restricted, and includes examples from across the history of Western music.  Sample pieces and composers treated in the text include such varied composers as Bill Evans, The Beatles, Josquin des Prez, Bessie Smith, Luicano Berio, and Pauline Oliveros.
    • incorporates the Implication-Realization Model.
    • is not simply a harmony textbook, treating form, melody and other topics before moving on to composition of polyphonic and harmonic examples in a wide variety of styles.
    • places perception at the forefront of musical inquiry.

At the moment, we are seeking a publisher and institutions interested in piloting our text.  We have been piloting it on campus for the past couple of years.
